Wilmington, North Carolina
Most people know of Wilmington as a great place to visit and an even better place to live, but what do you really know about the Port City? Wilmington was founded in 1739 and named after Spencer Compton, the First Earl of Wilmington (and also Britain’s second Prime Minister!). Prior to its incorporation, the city was known as New Carthage, New Liverpool, and Newton before the name Wilmington was decided upon. Although famously known for its surrounding beaches, Wilmington was once a railroad town that housed the longest single line railroad track in the world. The railroad no longer exists in Wilmington, North Carolina but is remembered at the Wilmington Railroad Museum downtown. It seems the love for Wilmington is widespread – Michael Jordan, Andy Griffith, and even former U.S. President Woodrow Wilson once called Wilmington home. With such a diverse history, it’s easy to see why Wilmington is the heart of North Carolina.
